Belonging
SPARK was founded on the idea that transgender, transsexual, and gender expansive folks deserve their own space within the Louisville scene; One where they don't feel objectified, out of place, or have trouble finding like-minded people.
Through late-night conversations and a desire to form social gatherings where people like us fully feel safe, SPARK was born. We don't aspire to be an enormous entity, but rather to build a close-knit community where transgender, transsexual, and gender expansive folks can be their authentic selves.
Meet the Founders
Bella Rose
She/Her
Integrity
New to Louisville, but committed to the local scene, Bella is a 25-year-old transfemme with a passion for social justice and advocacy. She hopes to uphold space and protections for all of her Queer kin.
Ash Olszewski
They/them
Authenticity
A 30-year-old Appalachian queer, born & raised in Kentucky, Ash is currently in school for psychology, with plans to minor in gender & women's studies. They consistently hold space for others to be their authentic selves.
Eve Allen
She/Her
Community
A multi-instrumentalist force of a woman, 29-year-old Eve has lived in the Louisville area for over a decade. Often found honing her guitar skills or producing music, she is known for her social skills and bringing people together.
Meet the City
1947
The Beaux Arts Cocktail lounge, believed to be Louisville's first gay bar in the 1950's, opened its doors in 1947. It would later close in 1955.
1970
The LGLF (Louisville Gay Liberation Front) became the first organization in Kentucky to openly advocate for gay equality.
1970
In July 1970 two Louisville women filed a marriage certificate. After being denied, they filed a landmark lawsuit. The resulting case (Jones v. Hallahan) is widely regarded as the first lesbian marriage court case in U.S. history.
1988
On June 25, 1988, Louisville hosted its second annual Gay and Lesbian March for Justice. Hundreds rallied in Central Park in Old Louisville before marching to the Jefferson County Courthouse.
